Christmas Baking Traditions
What are Mince Pies?
Mince pies haven’t always had the recognisable taste of spiced and sweet dried fruits in a syrupy filling. Believed to have originated in the Middle Ages, Mince pies were once served as the main meal as a warming Christmas dish, and they were filled commonly filled with mutton giving them the ‘mince’ part of their name.
What is Christmas Pudding?
Christmas Puddings have been a festive staple in many households across the UK for hundreds of years. Thought to date back to the Medieval period, the humble Christmas pudding during this era was a heavy dish, packed with suet, grains, vegetables and meat. It wasn’t until the Victorian era until it became the sweet dessert we eat today. Queen Victoria, as with many of our beloved Christmas traditions, is thought to have introduced the sweet version of the Christmas Pudding to the UK. It is now traditionally packed with raisins, currants, sultanas and mixed peel mixed with rum or brandy or a mixture of the two spirits.
